Ghost in the Sheet and Totem Quest – New Hit Candidates

While I was busy with our French blog, I nearly forgot to tell you about two great titles that are out this week:).

The first one is Ghost in the Sheet – a “heavyweight game” that turns out to be a light comedy adventure in the afterlife factory full of ironic moments. Travel to a ghost factory – master your supernatural skills and investigate the strange happenings that take place even in the afterlife.

And another title that got my attention is Totem Quest from CTXM. This is the freshest mind-bender that blends elements of connection puzzle and jigsaw. The point is to find all the Ancient Mayan totems by solving jigsaw puzzles. But here, in order to complete a level and solve the puzzle, you need to rotate all puzzle pieces of the same color so they match each other.

Yes, the ingredients of the gameplay in Totem Quest are pretty much classical, but this mixture(jigsaw+connection) added an absolutely unique and original look and feel to the game. Also, the pros of Totem Quest are its cool Mayan-style music and colorful graphics.

Today I decided to say a word about the games that will forever remain in the Fame Gallery of Casual Games. What else except Diner Dash and Mystery Case Files game series are there? The first BIG title that comes to my mind after mcf game series is AZADA from Big Fish Games.

This is a pioneer title in the genre of so-called point-and-click puzzles. In this game, you’ll have to investiage the disappearance of Titus and solve puzzles of all possible kinds – starting from simple jigsaw puzzles and up to real logical challenges.

Most of the levels are based on the point-and-click mechanics. That means, you’ll have to find the set of required objects in a number of rooms (say, a key and a match) and then use them to solve the puzzle. Light up the match, see the time on piece of paper, and set the clockwatch accordingly. Once you do that, you’re going to see a secret case that you’ll be able to open with your key.

On some levels of Azada, not only will you have to solve a puzzle. What’s more difficult, you’ll have to grasp its task. I was stuck on the level where you’ll have to uncover the sequence of paints on the paper. So, the point is to discover this sequence and touch each paint in this very sequence to get to the next level.

Azada is the first title that leads us to the world of mystery and subconsciousness in casual games. But it is not as scary as Hidden Secrets: The Nightmare. Azada is light and enjoyable due to its gorgeous light graphics and animation.

One day on the job interview I spent two hours solving banal logical tasks since an employer wanted to define my IQ. I now know it would be better to use Azada for that sake. This game can easily substitute for any IQ test. And much more enjoyable.

You can never satisfy your hunger for games. Now that I am done with such epic titles as Chocolatier 2 and fast-paced Turbo Subs, I am dying to start playing something new, elegant, and relaxing. I feel that it’s nothing better than look back in 2007 – since the greatest titles remained there.

I’m thankful to my destiny and Google that brought me to a review of Dream Day First Home by family-friendly-games.blogspot.com . It has truly recreated the flavour of this elegant hidden object game. So, I am pretty positive – I am going to try it! It really hooked me up.

P.S. I only wonder – how can a man(family-friendly-games.blogspot.com owner) write such detailed reviews of casual games? It’s nice to see some men in the community of casual game fans. And it’s nice to meet men who prefer clean family-friendly games to the core titles full of blood and violence(do you hear me, my elder son;0)

I know what you’re going to say: oh, those women! Never keep their promises. I am sorry it took me more than 24 hours to come up with tips and tricks. The thing is terrible flu caught me. I spent the whole day lying in my bed. So, I advice that you take a good care of yourself, and keep yourself warm these days.

1. When setting up production, in order to increase the production volume of any product, try to match the ingredients of the same color. Thus, they’ll be taken from the conveyor earlier.

2. Travel as frequently as possible to available ports provided you’ve got enough cash on hand to pay for the trip, and all your factories are working, so you’ll have something to sell in the future.

3. When you’re at the market and trying to buy some ingredients, HAGGLE if you find the suggested price too high(the pricing rate is displayed when you mouse over each ingredient for sale). Some vendors are more affable than others. The best place where I most frequently buy ingredients is San Jose Theatre Market. This guy cuts his prices more often than other vendors do. And this is the closest place to San-Francisco.

4. When selling your products, you can haggle as well. The best place to sell your ingredients for the first time is the shop in San Jose as well. Sell frequently to Mrs Baumeister – and soon she’ll gladly sell you her own shop.

5. Don’t haggle if:

a). the prices are at the lowest rate;

b). you haggled at the same place several times before;

c). you see the vendor(customer) is in a bad mood(Pay attention to their facial expression).

d). don’t haggle with San Francisco confectionery shop(this is my personal impression). You cannot talk turkey with the local shop owner. I decidedly didn’t like this lady.

6. Buy new factories, and laboratory once your budget allows you to.

7. Always try to base your production on the newly-uncovered recipes.

8. You can buy a laboratory for inventing your own recipes. You’ll be paid more for the products that contain secret ingedients. If you cannot match the ingredients you have qwith the secret ingredients, go to the market and get yourself a couple of sacks of a different ingredient.

9. When you’re visiting a port on no matter what purpose, once you’ve complete your mission, check all the locations at this port.

10. When you go gambling with somebody, don’t be greedy and leave the game while you uncover 60% of the boxes.

I hope you’ll help me continue this list and share your strategies and inventions. I love this game since it gives you a spirit of entreprenership and is just so enjoyable. Yummm…

As always I checked Big Fish Games website for something new and my eyes accidentally ran over this game – Hidden Secrets: The Nightmare. Now I must say, this is one of the strangest point-and-click adventure games I have played.

The game unveals a story of a young woman who lost her memory due to some accident. So, your point is to complete point-and-click levels in order to put the clues together to help Flora figure out how she ended up on the clinic bed.

 

Point-and-click levels – this is what I find most interesting as they really get your brain to work.

Just imagine: in order to solve the first level, you need to perform at least four actions:

1. Find the batteries for the remote control.

2. Take the remote control and switch th TV on.

3. Read a message displayed on the TV screen. It will tell you to open the book at the nightstand.

4. Once you open the book, you will see a birthday greeting card, which is a very important clue leading you to a point Flora or someone of her friends or relatives had a birthday.

Clue by clue, you restore the truth and get to the end(frankly, so far I’m in the middle of my way).

The good thing is, once you are done with the point-and-click level, you will be offered a very classical yet challenging puzzles(sort of peg in a hole – I am beating over right now, and Chinese rings).

Glamourous, gorgeous, glorious. This is all I can say about Dream Day First Home. Hats off to developers! I think this game is the best embodiment of GameGlamour. It blends stunning design and graphics, soothing musical soundtrack, and smooth storyline.

In case you’re new to the Dream Day game series, all you have to know is this is the epic that depicts life of a married couple. Jenny and Robert were trying to prepare their wedding in the first version of the game(Dream Day Wedding), enjoyed honeymoon full of hidden object adventures(Dream Day Honeymoon) and now, in the third and the latest series of the game – Dream Day First Home, just-married trouble-seekers:) are trying to make their first house a home.

I don’t want to ruin your first impression about the game, so I won’t just reveal the location of every object on every level. Instead, I’ll give you more useful information about the game, so you can enjoy it to the fullest:

1. Dream Day First Home can be played in Software(timed) and Carefree(No time limitation) modes. You can switch between them at any time. The latter is recommended for the players who prefer moderate game pace and don’t want to replay the stages for several times.

2. On a level, be sure to pick GOLDEN NEST EGGS in addition to all the hidden objects. Once you get 3 of them on a stage, you’ll get an extra hint.

3. Hints are gorgeous. Click on one even if you don’t need it. A golden bird will fly out of its nest and show you the hidden item. It’s worth seeing.

4. There is no need finding all items on every room of the stage. The number of clues to find to complete a stage is displayed above the item list.

5. Once you complete a level, you’ll be asked to play one of three Attic puzzles – Fix-R-Upper, Puzzle Garden, Perfect Match. In Fix-R-Upper, you’re to create a design for furniture items. In Puzzle Garden, the point is to find and click two corresponding tiles. In Perfect Match, you’re to click on two identical cards – and they’ll be removed. The point is to clear the playing field.

6. Another gorgeous feature is Choose a Story levels. While playing them, you’re to determine the way the things will go for Jenny and Robert. But no matter how dangerous a story may sound in the beginning, it will always have a happy ending.

7. After you successfully complete Choose a Story level, you’ll be awarded with a time-extending bonus. This is one of the hidden items that you’re to find on your next level in addition to all the items on the list. So, don’t forget to find it.
8. Homeowner Crisis – those levels that are real challenge. The point is to find all the hidden clues as soon as possible.

In the end, I’d like to emphasize on the curing effect that Dream Day First Home had on my nerves. When you please your eye and ear with classical musical tracks, go through glimmering rooms, find hidden clues one by one and watch this astonishing visuals – you just R-E-L-A-X. So, if you’re stressed out with your business, housechores, Xmas shopping, the best thing now is to take a sit, and help Jenny and Robert put everything in order in the cluttered rooms of their First Home. It turns out to be very stess-releaving.

This full walkthrough that contains explanations might be useful for persistent players who are set to solve all the puzzles right here and now, but I am determined to make it to the end myself.

So, I’ve worked out several tips and tricks that will hopefully help you smell the “direction” of the puzzle. Certainly, I will appreciate it if you add your own tips and tricks.

1. Some I Spy(i.e. hidden object) levels hide one more level inside. For instance, once you’ll click on a admission office at circus entrance or a suitcase on top of the roof – you’ll find yourself playing a new hidden object level. Don’t miss these rooms – they may hide about a dozen of hidden objects.

2. These levels-inside-the-levels(let’s call it “babushka levels” he-he), feature very tricky hidden objects. To give you an expample, you need to find a “repaired chain” , yet on the game field you see just the torn chain pieces. So, click on each of them, and you will get “the repaired chain”.

One more example can be seen below. You are asked to find a “well-fed kittie”, yet all you see is just a cat and cat food. Drag a package of cat food to the cat’s plate, and it’ll become well-fed. This is it! but it made me scratch my head for 20 minutes first time I was playing the “babushka level”!

3. Some hidden object items look like you’ll never expect them to look. So, if you’re asked to find a pig, it can be the word “pig” on some banner, not the image of a pig.4. BTW, I’m now playing the level with the Art the Carny Man, and I’m required to find B’s. So, it does not only mean all the letters B on the picture, but also bees(insects). Oh, cunning Big Fish!!! hehehe

5. The introductory I spy levels may hide an extra time bonus behind some hidden object.

6. When you’re on introductory I Spy level (the second level in the beginning of each episode), observe the game field for the changing objects. This is one more bonus!

7. Word puzzles are aimed at testing your IQ. Thus you’ll be required to swap the letters and form several words that mean the signs of Zodiac, or swap the leters in the table so you’ll form 6 words horizontally and verticaly at the same time(see below).

8. In case you’re stuck, you can use hints(there are 5 of them for each episode). In the latest version, hints only make the whole thing more complicated, as they show you the area where you can find one of the clues.

9. Don’t click randomly – or you’ll be penalized for 30 seconds.

10. Luckily, you can skip the last “get-everything-yourself” puzzles. But in such a case, the time for your next episode is reduced.

This is it so far. But I’ll play further, and will publish more hints for the game.

Discovering Nature – a new family friendly puzzle game

In this game you have a chance to help Professor Jane Pinckleport and put an end to a deadly virus. So, we have to collect different types of animals for expertise. It is a tricky puzzle, where you have to select as many animals of the same type with one move, but not only this… You will match pairs, food chains, search for infected animals, play survival game, feed bears, other mini games and even more.

You will progress in this game if in all golden frames (2 at the beginning) you will have animals of the same type, they will disappear and golden frames will be replaced. You will get a good bonus, if you will collect a whole row or all animals of the same type on the playfield.

This game is not only fun, it is a great possibility for Kids to learn various animals of different parts of our world and their food chains. (Somehow I think it could be useful for adults also 😉 )
And here are some tips:
– Look careful what types of animals you have to collect! In some puzzles there are more kinds of animals on the playfield, than you need (insects or grass).
– Don’t forget that you can select animals in all 8 directions! Diagonally also!!!
– In “match same” puzzle I usually try to put an animal of the type I need in the lower frame and then fill the upper frame, you will see why 😉
– Match pairs is the easiest puzzle, so try to collect all the bonuses (water and fire). In this puzzles begin from the top, otherwise you can destroy some pairs.
– In the “feeding bears” mini game it is easier for me to feed the farther one. If he could eat you first fish, don’t move your mouse and try to click so quick you can for some seconds. This helped me to complete the game much faster.
